Melissa's infectious passion for wildlife and her growing desire to communicate the science around animals to the general public has allowed her the opportunity to be on television! As a woman of color, she hopes her portrayal through digital media will inspire female minorities to pursue a path around STEM. Márquez has the ability to make science easy-to-understand and entertaining, using her experience and knowledge to help create wildlife films that showcase animal behaviour. She believes television shows, when done properly, can help generate interest in the general public to learn more about the nature shown on the screen and help champion a lifestyle where we fight for conserving wildlife while living side by side.

SHARK WEEK 2019 |
In 1945, one of the largest sharks on record was captured in Cuban waters, a great white named “El Monstruo.” Since then, sightings of massive sharks have been frequent in Cuban waters, but the island nation has always been restricted from outsider interference. Discovery takes a dive into unexplored waters in CUBA’S SECRET SHARK LAIR, as two teams of researchers are granted permission to study Cuba’s massive sharks. Melissa's team looks for a massive great hammerhead known as “The Queen" in southern Cuba; it is here where Márquez gets bitten and dragged by a crocodile while scuba diving and becomes famous for her calm behaviour.

150 miles off the coast of Baja, Calif., Guadalupe Island is a notorious hot spot for Great White sharks. Here to target the abundant seal population, Great Whites are silent hunters, stalking their prey and killing with a surprise attack. But the waters surrounding Guadalupe Island are crystal clear. So how do they do it? At other white shark hot spots around the world there is always a kill zone — a place where more predation events occur. But here in Guadalupe, an attack has never been witnessed. Now, a team of experts led by Dr. Yannis Papastamatiou and Melissa Márquez, are setting out to record never before seen white shark hunting behaviors. With the help of cutting-edge technology and three kinds of specialist cameras, they aim to discover the location of the Guadalupe Kill Zone.
