Is it just me or did the month of November absolutely fly by? I felt absolutely swamped as I tried to wrap a lot of workwise things up before the "true" holiday season hit on December 1st. I have a very special guest visiting in December and want to make sure my attention is all on them when we are finally reunited. Anyways, on to the riveting questions you all left me for this month. Remember, I only answer questions that I haven't answered before or that I have new answers for so if you've asked something and I didn't answer it try searching for it on my blog with a few keywords and I promise you'll find it! PERSONALIf you weren't a shark scientist, what would your job be? I probably would have been a weather channel "Storm Chaser." For a non-science related job, I wouldn't mind being a wedding planner... I love celebrating happy days! What is your favorite Disney Renaissance film? This is like asking me to choose between my children for a favorite. Tarzan and The Hunchback of Notre Dame both have incredible scores. Lion King is incredible (fight me on this, I dare you), and The Little Mermaid put me to sleep when I was a baby. All four have special places in my heart. Isn't your pendant from Turkey? Mexican culture has its own version of "mal de ojo" or the "evil eye." The symbol of the evil eye can be found in many countries - including Turkey! •••EDUCATION & WORKWhen is your third book coming out? April 2022! I'll be talking more about it in the new year, so keep your eyes peeled. How long have you been a marine biologist and what got you started? I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts "Marine Ecology and Conservation" degree in 2015. I talk about my passion for oceans in other Q&A's and interviews - check them out! When are you doing another YouTube video talking about sharks? I will be starting up my YouTube channel in 2022 (psst, hey GQ... how about a Round II?). Do you have any education or background in genetics? No. What is your favorite thing about university? That I am surrounded by so many intellectuals who focus on some incredibly diverse things! Do you have any big filming opportunities in 2022? Yes, I will be back in front of a camera in the new year... very excited to see what this new adventure holds for me. Will you be back for SharkFest or Shark Week next year? Yes! •••WILDLIFE Q’SCan sharks see color? This isn't my area of expertise at all, however even the experts seem to not have a "100% certain" answer. I think it depends on the species of shark. However, I think everyone agress that sharks are known to see contrast very well. What is your favorite Hexanchiforme (shark species)? Sharpnose sevengill sharks (Heptranchias perlo) are probably my fave, but I have a soft spot for Bluntnose sixgill sharks (Hexanchus griseus) since I got to recently work with them. In your expert opinion, should it be called shark encounters or shark attacks? Why? I agree with the experts who suggested that they should be called "shark encounters." The word "attack" has so many negative connotations, and it isn't specific enough when describing what happens during a human-shark encounter. Was it a bite? A fatal bite? What is provoked by the person? The term "shark encounter" or "fatal bite" is just as informative without the fear-inducing terminology. Favorite bizarre sea creature? Hands down the barreleye fish (Macropinna microstoma). Also known as the “spookfish,” due to its weird looks. What do you know about the Livyatan whale? I know it was a massive, ancient sperm whale that maybe sometimes duked it out with Megalodon (but due a lack of fossil specimens, we will never be 100% sure). •••RELATIONSHIPWhen are you seeing C again? Mid-December! He is coming to see me and meet my family and friends here (for the first time, eek)!! Are you and C married? Nope, we are de-facto. Will you share details about wedding planning? Probably not. I do want to keep some parts of my life (like this special event) private. Might share pictures after. AS ALWAYS, THANKS SO MUCH FOR SENDING IN YOUR GREAT QUESTIONS! BE SURE TO KEEP UP WITH MY INSTAGRAM STORIES TOWARDS THE END OF THE MONTH TO GET YOUR QUESTIONS IN FOR THE NEXT Q&A! Comments are closed.
