Hola amigxs! Not too much to say to introduce this month’s Q&A because I am short on time, but here are your questions and my answers for the February Q&A! Can you believe we are already in a new year? Wow! PERSONALFavorite prehistoric shark? Edestus! What a cool animal. Favorite "pro-tip" when you're on an expedition/adventure? Always pack snacks that remind you of home, same with pictures of loved ones. It helps when you inevitably get homesick or have a low day. Do you have a "word" for 2022? If yes, what is it? My word for the year is "ease," because I want to work smarter, not harder. Can you drop your hair routine? It's looking incredible lately! Thanks! I basically have been using an apple cider vinegar rinse, Rizos Curls shampoo and conditioner, Cantu leave-in conditioner (left overnight), and then various curl gels and mousse. •••EDUCATION & WORKWhat are some things you've had to sacrifice for your PhD? I feel like I sacrificed my presence at times, thinking about deadlines and whatnot. I've put off having kids and now marriage (I want to wait until I'm finished with my PhD). My finances have also taken a hit since I make so little money off the stipend, so I've not been able to hit certain financial goals. Can you tell us more about your children book writing process? Like concept, idea, to book deal, publishing... Inspiration kind of hits me whenever, so I can't really tell you When are you available to talk to students? Please email me to schedule something. I can't find any PhD's about sharks. Any recommendations? Get on social media platforms like Twitter and see what is being advertised! I've seen quite a few this year already posted. What are some tips for being on a panel? I always know everyone on the panel with me - I do research beforehand so I can find stuff to connect with them on (helps with having a smoother and more natural conversation). I also study what we will be discussing as if I was studying for an exam, narrowing it down to a few key points I want to focus on. •••WILDLIFE Q’SAre orcas more dangerous to humans than great whites? Well, there are no reliably verified fatal attacks on humans in the wild. Is there anything that can be done to reduce shark bycatch? Yes! I just covered one innovative way people are trying to reduce elasmobranch bycatch. Is it true that the moon can influence when sharks bite? According to new research, another shark behavior that might be influenced by lunar phases might be shark bites. Please remember that although traumatic experiences, "shark attacks" are rare. •••RELATIONSHIPWhy no shark related things at your wedding? I have more interests than just sharks. Plus, this is our wedding and since C isn't a marine biologist or shark scientist, it doesn't make sense. What has been the most exciting thing about getting engaged? Getting to call C my fiancé! Have you done any wedding planning? Not really, have just looked at a few venues and that's about it. What does your ring look like? It's an oval cut stone with some stones on the band. Extra sparkly! Keep an eye for it on Instagram stories.
